Chapter Twenty-One

I wander around Casper’s room, trying to calm my nerves. I didn’t mean to blow up on him, and right now, I need some time to myself. The room smells like him. There are small pictures of us smiling, kissing, completely in love. I wonder if he grabbed these from the human world.

We’re going to talk to his mother tonight. I can already tell she doesn’t like me. It could be that Casper is keeping me a secret which could potentially endanger both of us. Everything is so messed up and the only thought that keeps popping in my head to fix it is to return to my human life.

I can’t leave Casper. I won’t leave Casper. I want him with me.

Someone knocks on the door, and it opens. Tall, slim, and beautiful in a flowy orange dress, Saida enters. Her long hair has been curled and covers her smooth shoulders. The little gold specks in her green eyes are quite prominent. Her features may be small but they’re dramatic. High cheekbones. Perfect eyebrows that crown her eyes.

“Good evening,” she says.

“Hello,” I say, wondering why she’s in here.

“Such a beautiful Sprite. I’ve never seen one so close.” She walks up to me, staring. Her eyes rove over me as if she’s judging me. She’s not afraid of me and I can see the curiosity.

Saida exudes confidence as if she has nothing to worry about. “Perhaps one day, you and I will become the best of friends. I am a little concerned with some of the people here. They don’t necessarily want you here. I feel like you will need protection.”

I roll my eyes. Do I have a sign on my forehead that screams I need protection? “Are you going to provide that?”

“No. I can help though. You must know that no one wants you here. Bringing you here only leads the Sprites right to us. Casper must have known that. Makes me think that was why he brought you here.” She looks away, pursing her lips as in thought.

Her words slam into me and weighs on my heart. “That isn’t the only reason.”

“Oh, of course not, my dear,” she says as she takes my arm in hers. “Casper adores you. He did save you after all.”

“He also proposed.” I hold up my hand, showing her the ring.

She gasps, looking worried, then quickly recovers with a smile. “How wonderful!”

“Thanks. Is there anything you needed? I’m waiting for Casper to return for dinner.”

“Oh, you can come with me.”

I’m not sure if I should trust her. I can’t read her well. “Sure.”

“Great.” With a sly smile, she walks toward the door, opening it.

I don’t want to go to dinner with her, but I need to make friends. It’s clear no one is that pleased that I’m here.

I follow her out the door, and she leads me to a large common room where several Elves are eating. She hooks her arm with mine and as we pass, the stares continue. It’s almost as if I’m naked.
